Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) & Gender Equality (SDG 5)

Within this agenda, Sustainable Development Goal 5 – Gender Equality – stands as a cross-cutting priority, recognizing that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the full and equal participation of women and girls in all areas of life.
The EU mainstreams gender equality across its governance instruments, including legislation, external action, development cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and enlargement and neighbourhood policies. Through initiatives such as Gender Action Plans (GAPs), gender budgeting, and rights-based approaches, the EU seeks to eliminate discrimination, strengthen women’s economic empowerment, prevent gender-based violence, and promote equal representation in decision-making.
Beyond its borders, the EU works with international organizations, civil society, and partner countries to diffuse gender norms, build institutional capacity, and integrate equality standards into global governance frameworks. By embedding SDG 5 into its policies, the Union aims to contribute to more resilient societies, inclusive economies, and sustainable peace.
